RESTON—March 18, 2020—The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is making several resources free to help support teachers during school closures due to the COVID-19 virus. Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12 (MTLT)is making two departments freely accessible and is fully devoted to helping teachers meet the needs of their students during this time. NCTM is also offering Illuminations interactives free to the public. The interactives provide standards-based resources and materials for PK12. Figure This! resources are also free to the public and they can help families with children in middle school to enjoy mathematics outside of school through a series of fun and engaging, high quality challenges. NCTM will also host a free webinar—Making the Shift to Online Math Instruction: Supporting PK16 Educators in Online Pedagogy—on March 24, 2020.

Beginning immediately the MTLT Growing Problem Solvers department and the Problems to Ponder department will be free access for as long as students remain out of their classrooms.

Growing Problem Solvers are rich tasks that can potentially span four points along the PK–12 learning trajectory (elementary, intermediate, junior high and high school) and can elicit higher order thinking. Each task is a low-floor/high-ceiling task with multiple entry points, allowing for a variety of solution strategies and reaching many different learners. A teacher page explores the math and potential instructional strategies.

Problems to Ponder are individual problems or groups of problems that are grade-band specific, much like those that appeared in NCTM’s legacy journals: the Math by the Month department in Teaching Children Mathematics, the Palette of Problems in Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, and the Calendar in Mathematics Teacher.

“The MTLT journal is dedicated to helping teachers provide high quality content to ensure effective mathematics instruction for each and every student,” said Angela T. Barlow, editor- in-chief of MTLT.

NCTM also offers classroom resources to both members and nonmembers. Illuminations interactives are free to the public and they provide standards-based resources and materials for grades PK-12. The interactives can be accessed on the web for students to use on their computers or tablets. Teachers and parents will enjoy instructional videos and instructional guides to support students with these interactives. Figure This! resources are also free to the public and they can help families with children in middle school to enjoy mathematics outside of school through a series of fun and engaging, high quality challenges. The challenges feature descriptions of the important mathematics involved, questions to think about, complete solutions, and resources for further exploration to name a of the educational offerings.

NCTM will host a free webinar—Making the Shift to Online Math Instruction: Supporting PK-12 Educators in Online Pedagogy—hosted by Mike Flynn on March 24, 2020at 7p.m. ET.
