The Growing Problem Solvers department this month focuses on probability. Students are given concrete gopher tunnels to think about likely events. As the tunnels get more complicated, students will need to consider compound probabilities. Students at all grade levels can construct their own tunnels and think about how likely different routes are to be traveled.

With the youngest students, it may be prudent to discuss chances as never, not likely, likely, and certain. For older students, you can represent probabilities as percentages or fractions, or even ranges of percentages, such as 0 percent, less than 50 percent, exactly 50
