Problem Solvers: Responses to Mathematics of Motion

he problem appearing in the December 1999 “Problem Solvers” section was stated as follows: Using the design shown, find a series of moves to take the design from the top-left corner of a piece of paper to the bottom-right corner, in its original orientation. A move must be a flip, a turn, or a slide; and you must use more flips and turns than you use slides. How many moves were needed? Draw each move on a piece of paper, or use pattern blocks to build a model of what the design looks like after each move. Try to do the task again in fewer moves. What strategies helped you do so?
