Integrating Measurement Projects: Sand Timers

Children both enjoy and readily involve themselves in projectoriented activities. This article describes how students made their own sand timers. I have used this activity as a mathematics and science center in my second-grade classroom for four years. The results and discussions are never exactly the same, yet this project consistently renews my interest in giving students problem-oriented activities to help them integrate subjects. Whenever I announce a new project, my whole classroom comes alive. Students do love projects!
