Connecting Children's Mathematical Thinking with Family and Community Knowledge in Mathematics Instruction

This department publishes brief news articles, announcements, and guest editorials on current mathematics education issues that stimulate the interest of TCM readers and cause them to think about an issue or consider a specific viewpoint about some aspect of mathematics education.

Tonya Bartell, tbartell@msu.edu, is an associate professor of mathematics education at Michigan State University whose teaching and research focus on the development of equitable mathematics instructional practices that support the learning of all students.

Erin E. Turner, eturner@email.arizona.edu, an associate professor of mathematics education at the University of Arizona, is a former bilingual elementary teacher. Her teaching and research interests focus on teaching and learning mathematics in culturally and linguistically diverse settings.

Julia Maria Aguirre, jaguirre@uw.edu, is an associate professor of education at the University of Washington Tacoma. Her research interests include equity and social justice in mathematics teaching and learning, teacher education, and culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy.

Corey Drake, cdrake@msu.edu, is an associate professor and Director of Teacher Preparation at Michigan State University whose research interests include supporting preservice elementary teachers in productively using curriculum materials toward equitable mathematics instruction.

Mary Q. Foote, mary.foote@qc.cuny.edu, is a professor in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Queens College, CUNY. Her research attends to equity issues in mathematics education and its implications for mathematics teacher education and professional development.

Amy Roth McDuffie, mcduffie@tricity.wsu.edu, is a professor of mathematics education and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Education at the University of Washington Tri-Cities. Her research and teaching focuses on supporting teachers in developing equitable instructional practices for mathematics teaching and learning.
