Try an activity that was designed to help third graders organize their thinking about rational number notation by connecting to well-established, whole-number routines.

Ann McCoy, mccoy@ucmo.edu, is an associate professor of mathematics education at the University of Central Missouri. She is interested in the mathematical preparation of elementary school teachers.

Joann Barnett, mathematicalmama@hotmail.com, is a facilitator for the elementary math specialist program at Missouri State University and an adjunct at Ozark Technical Community College. She is interested in developing lessons that help students of all ages gain fractional fluency.

Tammy Stine, tammystine@mail.ozark.k12.mo.us, is a third-grade teacher in the Ozark R-VI School District as well as a student in Missouri State University's elementary math specialist program.
