What is in a name? Actually, quite a lot of math! Join us as “math by the month” challenges students to apply their knowledge of data analysis, geometry, and algebraic thinking to solve this collection of math problems.

Contributor Notes

These problems were submitted by Lynn Columba, who teaches in the department of education and human services; Thomas Hammond, hammond@lehigh.edu, who teaches instructional technology and social studies education; and Lanette Waddell, lrw207@lehigh.edu, a professor of practice who specializes in mathematics education and the mathematical professional development of in-service teachers. All three are colleagues at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. E-mail problem collections to Columba at hlc0@lehigh.edu for consideration as future “math by the month” columns. Find detailed submission guidelines at www.nctm.org/tcmdepartments. E-mail creative solutions and adapted problems to tcm@nctm.org for potential publication, noting “readers exchange” in the subject line.
