In my precalculus classes, after the unit on graphing sinusoidal functions, I break the class into groups of four students. They are given word problem applications related to a point spinning on a wheel or a buoy bouncing in the bay. Each group is given six problems—from activity sheet A, B, or C—to determine the model for each situation (see activity sheet B in fig. 1).
