For Your Information – February 2011

Accessible Mathematics has two distinct parts. In the first, Leinwand describes ten practical changes that mathematics teachers can make to help their students develop a deeper understanding of content. One shift that he advocates is for teachers to require students to justify answers. This practice not only reveals an individual student's level of understanding about a specific concept; it also allows the rest of the students to become part of the mathematics discussion by giving alternate solutions or explaining a solution in their own words.
