In the early days of standardized testing. eager practitioners sought to find a single score that would completely classify a student. David Rappaport suggests [in his letter in March 1977 JRME] that we are heading for the same trap in our statistical comparisons of various methods, trying to find “the best way” to teach algebra, or multiplication, or whatever.
