The International Study of Achievement in Mathematics is a truly magnificent accomplishment. The task of international comparison is difficult at best. The refinements of technique applied to the task were many and were generally well done, as might have been expected of the caliber of the research staff assembled. One must be impressed with the outcomes and with the wisdom shown in interpreting them. One may also properly rejoice in the establishment and continuation of a competent team in this area of research.
